U.S. Hospitals Graded on Patient Safety by Leapfrog Group

The Leapfrog Group has released its latest hospital safety grades. These grades evaluate hospitals across the United States. They focus on how well hospitals protect patients from harm. This includes preventing medical errors and infections.

The nonprofit organization graded over 3,000 facilities nationwide. This report marks the organization’s 20th year of public grading. It helps patients make informed healthcare choices.

Key Findings from the Fall 2024 Report

Many hospitals earned top marks. About 39% of the evaluated hospitals received an ‘A’ grade. These facilities demonstrate a strong commitment to patient safety.

However, other hospitals received lower grades. Approximately 0.7% of hospitals earned an ‘F’. Another 3.3% were given a ‘D’. These grades signal areas needing significant improvement.

The grades reflect performance on various safety measures. These include hospital-acquired infections. They also cover medication errors and patient communication.

State Performance Highlights

Several states showed exceptional performance. For instance, New Jersey had a high percentage of ‘A’ hospitals. Virginia also performed well, with 54.1% of its hospitals getting an ‘A’. Delaware and Massachusetts also stood out.

On the other hand, some states lagged behind. Alaska, Maryland, and North Dakota had no ‘A’ grades. Wyoming and Washington, D.C. also fell into this category. These states may face challenges in patient safety protocols.

The report highlights disparities in care quality across the nation. This information is crucial for local communities.

Understanding the Grading System

Leapfrog uses a comprehensive methodology. It includes data from Medicare. The system also incorporates Leapfrog’s own hospital survey. Experts review and update these measures regularly.

The grades are updated twice a year. This provides ongoing transparency for consumers. It also encourages hospitals to continually improve safety standards.

The goal is to reduce preventable deaths. Hospital errors contribute to thousands of deaths annually. These grades aim to shine a light on this critical issue.
