Raymarine Partners with Seabed 2030 to Map the Ocean Floor

Raymarine, a major maker of marine electronics, has joined forces with the Seabed 2030 project. Seabed 2030 is a global initiative. Its goal is to create a complete, publicly available map of the entire ocean floor by the year 2030.

This partnership will use Raymarine’s advanced sonar technology. The aim is to collect detailed bathymetric data. Bathymetric data measures the depth of the ocean. This information is important for navigation, safety, and scientific research.

What is Seabed 2030?

Seabed 2030 is a collaborative project. It is coordinated by the Nippon Foundation and the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO). GEBCO is the only organization authorized by the United Nations to create ocean floor maps.

The project aims to bring together all available bathymetric data. It also encourages new mapping expeditions. The goal is to create a comprehensive map. This map will help us better understand the ocean and its impact on the planet.

Raymarine’s Role

Raymarine will contribute by using its advanced sonar systems. These systems are installed on many recreational and commercial vessels. Raymarine’s technology allows boaters to gather depth data as they travel. This crowdsourced data will then be shared with Seabed 2030.

In addition, Raymarine will actively promote Seabed 2030. It will encourage its customers to participate in data collection efforts. This will help raise awareness about the importance of mapping the ocean floor. The company believes that by working together, they can greatly accelerate the mapping process.

Why Map the Ocean Floor?

Mapping the ocean floor is important for several reasons. First, it improves maritime safety. Accurate charts help ships navigate safely and avoid accidents. Second, it helps with resource management. Knowing the shape of the ocean floor helps us manage fisheries and other marine resources sustainably.

Third, it aids in scientific research. A detailed map of the ocean floor can help us understand ocean currents, climate change, and geological processes. It also helps in the discovery of new species and habitats. Finally, complete mapping is essential for informed policy and sound governance of our shared seas.

Benefits of the Partnership

This partnership brings several benefits. Seabed 2030 gains access to a vast network of data collection platforms. Raymarine’s customers can contribute to a significant global effort. The ocean research community gets access to a bigger pool of information.

In conclusion, the collaboration between Raymarine and Seabed 2030 marks a significant step. It will help us achieve a complete map of the ocean floor. This map will improve safety, aid research, and promote the sustainable use of ocean resources.
