Michael J. Napierala, Esteemed Chautauqua County Treasurer and Veteran, Passes Away at 79

Fredonia, NY – Michael J. Napierala, a respected leader and decorated U.S. Army veteran, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2026. He was 79 years old. Mr. Napierala leaves a significant legacy of public service. His dedication to community and family was profound. His passing deeply impacts the Fredonia and Dunkirk areas.

Early Life and Education

Michael was born in Dunkirk, New York, on November 24, 1946. His parents were Michael and Clara (Lanski) Napierala. He attended St. Hyacinth’s School. He then graduated from Cardinal Mindszenty High School in 1964. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Fredonia State University in 1968. Later, he achieved his Master of Business Administration from Canisius College. This strong educational background supported his future career.

Distinguished Military Service

Mr. Napierala proudly served in the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. His bravery in combat earned him the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. His military experience shaped his strong sense of duty. This commitment was evident throughout his life.

A Career in Public Service

Michael J. Napierala enjoyed a long career in finance and public administration. He worked as an accountant at Dunkirk Ice Cream and Red Wing Co. In 1974, he joined the Chautauqua County Treasurer’s Office. He served as Deputy Treasurer until 1981. In 1982, he became Chautauqua County Treasurer. He held this position for 27 years. He retired honorably in 2009. His tenure was marked by fiscal responsibility. He was a trusted steward of public funds.

Active Community Leadership

Mr. Napierala dedicated himself to many community organizations. He was a life member of American Legion Post 59. He also supported Fredonia Memorial Post 5271 VFW. He was active with the Dom Polski Club. He served on the Northern Chautauqua Catholic School’s finance committee and board. His commitment extended to higher education. He served on the Erie County Community College Board of Trustees. He also chaired the Fredonia College Council. He was president of the New York State Association of Counties in 1990. Michael was a past president and Paul Harris Fellow of the Dunkirk-Fredonia Rotary. He also contributed to St. Columban’s on the Lake. His impact on local institutions was significant.

Beloved Family Man

Family was central to Michael’s life. He married Christine (Nawrocki) Napierala in 1971. They shared over five decades of marriage. He was a loving father to Michael F. (Amy) Napierala and Molly (Jeffrey) Marsh. He cherished his five grandchildren: Claire, Emma, Michael T. Napierala; Ryan and Rachel Marsh. He was a devoted fan of the Fredonia Blue Devils, Buffalo Bills, and Buffalo Sabres. He also enjoyed golf and travel. Destinations included Hawaii and the Caribbean. Michael will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Barbara Kulig, Mark, and Richard Napierala.

Funeral Services

Relatives and friends may call on Sunday, February 16, 2026. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. It will be held at McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home in Dunkirk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 17, 2026. The Mass starts at 10:00 AM. It will take place at Blessed Mary Angela Parish (St. Hyacinth’s Site). Interment will follow at St. Hyacinth’s Cemetery. Military honors will be presented at the graveside.

Memorial Contributions

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are welcomed. Contributions can be made to the American Legion Post 59 in Dunkirk. The Northern Chautauqua Catholic School is another option. Both causes were dear to Mr. Napierala. They reflect his lifelong commitment to service.
