His passing occurred at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was widely recognized for his extensive public service. Moreover, he had a distinguished career in engineering.
Early Life and Education
Mr. Horst was born on January 8, 1947. His parents were Karl and Irene (Schubert) Horst. He grew up within the local community. He completed his high school education at Jamestown High School in 1965. Furthering his studies, he attended Jamestown Community College. There, he earned an Associate in Applied Science degree. He then pursued a Bachelor of Science degree. This degree was in Mechanical Engineering. He received it from the Rochester Institute of Technology.
A Distinguished Career
Mr. Horst’s professional journey began early in life. He worked alongside his father, Karl, at Horst & Son. Later, he advanced to General Manager. This role was at Great Lakes Metal Stamping. Subsequently, he became the owner of Horst and Son Tool and Die Company. His expertise also led him to various manufacturing engineering positions. He worked at Ulrich Planfiling and Monofrax. In addition, he contributed his skills at SKF. Mr. Horst retired from SKF in 2009, concluding a successful career.
Dedicated Public Service
Community involvement was a core aspect of Mr. Horst’s life. He was a devoted member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. He faithfully served as the church’s treasurer for many years. His commitment to public office was significant. He held the position of Town of Busti Supervisor for two decades. Furthermore, he served as a Chautauqua County Legislator. He completed two terms in this important role. Mr. Horst also contributed his insights to several key boards. These included BOCES and Jamestown Community College. He further served on the Chautauqua Lake Association. His efforts also extended to Southern Tier West, impacting regional development.
Family Life and Personal Interests
John Horst cherished his family deeply. He was married to Shirley Horvath Horst for 55 years. Their marriage began on July 17, 1970. Together, they raised three sons: Karl (Jennifer), Christopher (Jessica), and Eric (Danielle). He was a proud grandfather to ten grandchildren. They are Kaelyn, Kara, John, Jason, Matthew, Maxwell, Michael, Mason, Mallory, and Madalyn. He also leaves behind two beloved great-grandchildren. His siblings include Patricia Ruland (Fred), Carl Horst (Carol), and Richard Horst (Mary Lou). Mr. Horst was a proud U.S. Army veteran. He bravely served his country during the Vietnam War. In his leisure time, he enjoyed many hobbies. These included fishing, hunting, and golf. He also had a passion for woodworking and gardening. Traveling, especially to Myrtle Beach, was a favorite pastime. He cherished moments spent with his beloved family and friends.
Legacy and Memorials
There will be no public visitation for Mr. Horst. A private funeral service is planned for immediate family. Burial will take place at Sunset Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested. Donations can be made to Chautauqua Hospice & Palliative Care. Mr. Horst’s life exemplified dedication to his family, community, and country. His lasting impact on Chautauqua County will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
