iRocket Taps Velo3D for Advanced Metal 3D Printing of Rocket Engines

iRocket, a U.S. leader in space launch services, recently announced a key partnership. The company will leverage Velo3D’s advanced metal 3D printing technology. This collaboration focuses on manufacturing critical engine components. These parts are for iRocket’s innovative ‘Shockwave’ rocket.

This move is set to transform iRocket’s production capabilities. It aims to accelerate the development of reusable space launch systems. The agreement highlights a growing trend in the aerospace sector. Companies are increasingly adopting additive manufacturing for complex parts.

Velo3D’s Role in Advanced Manufacturing

Velo3D will provide its cutting-edge Sapphire XC 3D printing system. This machine specializes in producing complex metal parts. It offers high precision and repeatability. These features are vital for aerospace applications.

Benny Buller is the CEO of Velo3D. He noted the company’s ability to create high-performance parts. This includes designs that are difficult to produce with traditional methods. Velo3D’s technology ensures consistent quality. This is crucial for rocket engine reliability. Such capabilities support iRocket’s aggressive launch schedule.

iRocket’s Vision for Reusable Space Travel

iRocket is developing a fully autonomous, reusable launch system. This system is designed for rapid deployment. The ‘Shockwave’ rocket features self-regulating engine technology. It uses liquid oxygen and methane as propellants.

Asad Malik is the CEO and Co-Founder of iRocket. He emphasized the importance of this partnership. Malik stated that Velo3D’s technology is critical. It enables the creation of an efficient, reusable launch vehicle. This aligns with iRocket’s mission. The company aims to make space access more affordable.

The Shockwave rocket is designed to carry small satellites. Its initial launch is planned for the fourth quarter of 2024. iRocket plans to offer cost-effective and frequent launch opportunities. This will benefit the growing small satellite market in the U.S. and globally.

Driving Innovation in Space

This partnership signifies a major step forward. It pushes the boundaries of rocket manufacturing. Metal 3D printing offers significant advantages. These include reduced part count, lighter components, and faster production cycles. These benefits are essential for a competitive space industry.

Furthermore, using advanced manufacturing techniques helps meet strict aerospace standards. It also allows for rapid design iterations. This accelerates development time. Both companies are committed to innovation. Their collaboration supports the U.S. in maintaining its leadership in space technology. Ultimately, this will help reduce the cost and complexity of space launches.
