Ford Recalls Over 4.3 Million Vehicles for Software Fix

Ford Motor Company has announced a major safety recall affecting more than 4.3 million vehicles. This action impacts a wide range of popular models across several years. The recall addresses a critical software issue. This defect could lead to a sudden loss of power steering, brake, and stability control features. Such a loss can increase the risk of a crash.

Understanding the Software Glitch

The core problem involves a communication failure. Specifically, the vehicle’s electrical architecture may lose contact with the body control module (BCM). The BCM is crucial for managing various vehicle functions. When communication is lost, essential systems can unexpectedly shut down. These include power steering assist and braking functions. Stability control, which helps maintain vehicle handling, also becomes unavailable. Therefore, this issue poses a significant safety risk to drivers.

Affected Ford and Lincoln Models

The recall spans many Ford and Lincoln vehicles. Model years from 2018 to 2024 are included. The affected list is extensive. It covers popular trucks, SUVs, and cars. These include the Ford F-150, Expedition, and Ranger. Other models are the Super Duty, Explorer, Bronco, and Mustang. For Lincoln owners, the Navigator, Aviator, and Corsair are part of this recall. Even newer models like the F-150 Lightning and E-Series are impacted. Ford is advising owners to check if their specific vehicle is included.

Ford’s Solution and Owner Notification

Ford plans to fix the issue with a software update. This update will restore proper communication within the vehicle’s electrical system. Vehicle owners will not incur any cost for this repair. Ford will begin notifying registered owners by mail. These letters are expected to go out starting July 13. Owners should contact their local Ford or Lincoln dealership for service. Dealerships will perform the necessary software update free of charge.

Safety Concerns and Previous Actions

Ford has received 13 reports regarding a loss of vehicle control linked to this issue. Fortunately, the company has not confirmed any crashes or injuries directly caused by this specific defect. However, the potential for serious incidents remains. It is important for all affected vehicle owners to address this recall promptly. This latest recall builds on previous efforts. Ford conducted a similar recall in 2023 for certain models. That action also targeted issues within the vehicle’s electrical system. This new recall expands the scope to a broader range of vehicles.

Importance for Vehicle Owners

This widespread recall highlights the growing complexity of modern vehicle systems. Software plays an increasingly vital role in safety and performance. Owners of recalled Ford and Lincoln vehicles should prioritize getting the software update. Addressing this issue quickly helps ensure continued safety on the road. For more information, vehicle owners can visit Ford’s recall website or contact their local dealer. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) oversees such recalls to protect public safety.
