Carl O. Brandt, Beloved Educator and Veteran, Passes Away at 79

Fredonia, NY – Carl O. Brandt, a revered educator, devoted family man, and proud U.S. Navy veteran, passed away on October 18, 2025. He was 79 years old. Mr. Brandt died peacefully at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dunkirk, New York. His passing marks the end of a life rich in service and dedication to his community and loved ones.

A Life of Learning and Service

Carl O. Brandt was born on May 12, 1946. His parents were Carl A. and Alice L. (Carlson) Brandt. He grew up in the Fredonia area. He graduated from Fredonia High School in 1964. Mr. Brandt continued his education. He attended SUNY Brockport. Later, he earned a Master’s Degree in Library Science. This degree was from the University at Buffalo.

Dedicated Military Service

Mr. Brandt proudly served his country. He was a member of the U.S. Navy. He served during the Vietnam War. His military service reflected his commitment. He always put duty first. This early experience shaped his character.

Family and Legacy

On May 17, 1969, Carl married Sandra Wensel. Their marriage spanned over five decades. They built a wonderful life together. Together, they raised two children. Their son is David Brandt and his wife, Jill. Their daughter is Kelly Gier and her husband, Daniel. Carl was a cherished grandfather. His grandchildren include Christopher Brandt, Caitlyn Brandt, Daniel Gier, and Alyssa Gier. His family was his greatest joy. He leaves behind a loving legacy.

An Esteemed Career in Education

For three decades, Mr. Brandt dedicated himself to education. He served as both a teacher and a librarian. He worked at Fredonia Central School. His career impacted many students. He retired in 2001. He left a lasting impression on the school community. His passion for learning was evident. He encouraged students to explore knowledge.

Community Involvement and Personal Interests

Beyond his professional life, Carl was very active. He was deeply involved in Chautauqua County. He was a past president of the Chautauqua County Historical Society. This showed his love for local history. He was also a member of the Shorewood Country Club. Carl enjoyed boating and fishing. He loved gardening. Traveling was another favorite pastime. He was a passionate fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Moreover, he held a deep interest in Civil War history. His diverse interests enriched his life. They connected him with many people.

Funeral and Memorial Details

Friends and family may call on Monday, October 21. Visitation hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. This will be at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 22. It begins at 10 a.m. The service will be at the First United Presbyterian Church in Fredonia. Reverend Milton G. Nieske will officiate. Full military honors will be observed. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery in Fredonia, New York.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested. Donations can be made to the Chautauqua County Historical Society. Alternatively, they may go to the First United Presbyterian Church. The Fredonia Volunteer Fire Department is another option. These organizations reflect Carl’s community spirit.
