Major Recall Issued for Pet Treats and Food

Midwestern Pet Foods has updated its recall. It involves several brands of dry dog and cat food. Some pet treats are also included. The recall stems from potential salmonella contamination. This alert was recently updated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Understanding the Recall

The affected products were made at the company’s Chickasha, Oklahoma, facility. Brands subject to this recall include ProPac, Sportmix, Splash, and Nunn Better. Other brands are Sportstrail, CanineX, Earthborn Holistic, Venture, Wholesomes, Unrefined, Best Breed, and Sportmix Wholesome. Consumers should check any pet food or treats from these brands.

Salmonella Risks to Pets

Salmonella can cause serious illness in animals. Infected pets might show various symptoms. These include sluggishness, diarrhea, or bloody stools. Vomiting, fever, and a reduced appetite are also possible. Some pets may experience abdominal pain. In severe cases, salmonella can even be fatal. Pets can also carry the bacteria without showing symptoms. They can then spread the infection to other animals or humans.

Salmonella Risks to Humans

People handling contaminated products face health risks. Simply touching the food or contaminated surfaces can lead to infection. Common symptoms in humans include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Abdominal cramping and fever may also occur. Diarrhea can sometimes be bloody. Young children, elderly individuals, and those with weak immune systems are most vulnerable.

What Consumers Should Do

Pet owners must immediately stop using any recalled products. Do not feed them to your pets. Dispose of the food or treats safely. Place them in a sealed bag within a secure trash can. This prevents further spread. Thoroughly wash pet food bowls and any storage containers. Use hot, soapy water for cleaning. Always wash your hands well after handling pet food or treats.

Contact and Reporting Information

If your pet shows any salmonella symptoms, contact your veterinarian. Seek professional medical advice if you or anyone in your household experiences symptoms. Midwestern Pet Foods is available for questions. You can call them at 800-474-4163, extension 455. Additionally, the FDA encourages reporting any adverse reactions. This includes issues affecting pets or humans. Reports can be submitted through the FDA’s website. Your quick action helps ensure public and pet safety.
