Irv Cross: Philadelphia Eagles Legend and Pioneering Sportscaster

Irv Cross forged a remarkable path. He grew from humble beginnings in Arkansas. Cross became a star for the Philadelphia Eagles. Later, he broke barriers as a national sportscaster. His journey is a powerful story of strength and resilience. We honor his legacy during Black History Month.

Early Life and Football Roots

Cross was born in Hammond, Arkansas. He grew up in a segregated era. Sports became his avenue for success. He excelled at high school football. Later, he played college football at Northwestern University. His talent was clear. He quickly stood out on the field.

NFL Career with the Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles drafted Irv Cross. This was in 1961. He joined the team as a cornerback. Cross quickly became a key player. He earned two Pro Bowl selections. His powerful play made him a fan favorite. Cross spent six seasons with the Eagles. He then played for the Los Angeles Rams. His NFL career ended in 1969. He left a strong mark on the game.

Breaking Barriers in Sports Broadcasting

After his playing days, Cross made history. He transitioned into sports broadcasting. In 1971, he joined CBS Sports. Cross became one of the first Black analysts. He worked on national television. This was a significant step forward. He helped open doors for many others.

Cross co-anchored “The NFL Today.” This iconic show launched in 1975. He worked alongside Brent Musburger and Phyllis George. The show changed how fans watched football. It brought pregame analysis to millions. Cross’s calm demeanor and insightful commentary were vital. He spent 15 seasons on “The NFL Today.” He became a beloved figure in American homes.

A Lasting Legacy and Personal Strength

Irv Cross’s impact went beyond the screen. He was a role model for many. His career showed dedication and courage. He paved the way for future generations. Cross battled health challenges later in life. He openly discussed his struggle with dementia. His family provided unwavering support. He passed away in 2021 at age 81.

Cross received many accolades. He earned the Pete Rozelle Award in 2009. This honored his contributions to pro football. His legacy endures. He remains a symbol of progress. The Philadelphia Eagles proudly remember Irv Cross. He was a true trailblazer both on and off the field.
