U.S. Government Investigates Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Software

Federal safety officials are investigating Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. This probe follows several crashes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is leading the investigation. It includes more than 2 million Tesla vehicles across the United States.

The NHTSA opened this inquiry in April 2024. This happened after receiving a complaint. The complaint detailed 13 crashes involving Tesla vehicles. These incidents occurred between December 2023 and February 2024. All crashes involved vehicles running FSD Beta software versions.

Initial Concerns and Prior Recalls

The investigation is not a new issue for Tesla. The NHTSA has previously scrutinized Tesla’s automated driving systems. In 2022, the agency began evaluating the FSD system. This was in response to various reports of unexpected braking. Tesla has also issued several recalls related to its driver-assist features.

For instance, in December 2023, Tesla recalled over 2 million vehicles. This recall aimed to fix a problem with its Autopilot driver-assist system. The system reportedly allowed drivers to misuse the technology. It could be used for extended periods without proper driver supervision. Regulators raised concerns that these controls were insufficient. They believed the system did not prevent misuse effectively.

Details of the Current Investigation

The latest probe specifically targets the FSD software. Investigators are looking into its role in the recent crashes. These incidents reportedly involved vehicles colliding with stationary objects. This included fire trucks, police vehicles, and disabled cars. Some crashes also involved hitting pedestrians or other obstacles.

The NHTSA is examining how the FSD system operates. They want to understand its limitations. Furthermore, they are assessing how drivers interact with the technology. The agency seeks to determine if the FSD system poses an unreasonable safety risk. They are focusing on whether the system adequately monitors driver attention and engagement.

Tesla’s Response and Future Outlook

Tesla has previously stated that its FSD system is an advanced driver-assist feature. It requires active driver supervision. The company emphasizes that drivers must remain attentive. They need to be ready to take control at all times.

However, federal regulators are assessing these claims. The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications. It may lead to further recalls. It could also result in stricter regulations for autonomous driving technology. Meanwhile, Tesla continues to update its software. It aims to improve the safety and performance of FSD. The company faces ongoing pressure to ensure its technology meets all safety standards for American roads.

This widespread federal oversight highlights growing concerns. It addresses the safe deployment of advanced driver-assist systems. The automotive industry and consumers alike are watching closely.
