Barbara J. Abbey, Longtime Dunkirk Resident and LPN, Passes Away at 87

Dunkirk, NY – Barbara J. Abbey, a cherished resident and devoted healthcare professional, passed away at the age of 87. Her passing marks the end of a life rich in service and community engagement. Mrs. Abbey was a well-known figure in the local area. She touched many lives throughout her long and impactful journey. Her family and friends mourn her loss. The community remembers her fondly.

A Life of Care and Service

Barbara J. Abbey was born on January 2, 1938. Her birthplace was Gowanda, New York. She was the daughter of Stephen J. and Julia M. (Balder) Gajewski. Mrs. Abbey received her early education in Gowanda. She graduated from Gowanda High School in 1955. Her passion for helping others led her to pursue a career in nursing. She then enrolled at the Jamestown School of Practical Nursing. Mrs. Abbey successfully completed her studies in 1956. She became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) soon after. This began a distinguished career in healthcare.

Her professional journey spanned 37 years. Mrs. Abbey worked at several respected institutions. These included Gowanda State Hospital. She also served at Brooks Memorial Hospital. Additionally, she contributed her skills to WCA Hospital. Colleagues remember her dedication and compassionate care. She was known for her kindness to patients. Her commitment to her profession was unwavering. Mrs. Abbey retired from nursing in 1993. Her retirement marked the end of a remarkable service period.

Family and Personal Life

On June 29, 1957, Barbara married Robert A. Abbey. Their wedding took place at St. Joseph’s Church in Gowanda. They shared a loving marriage for many years. Robert passed away on August 2, 2017. Together, they built a beautiful family. They raised three sons. These sons are Robert S. (Carol) Abbey, Ronald J. (Kathleen) Abbey, and Randall P. (Cynthia) Abbey. Mrs. Abbey was a devoted mother. She greatly cherished her role in the family.

Her family grew significantly over time. She was a beloved grandmother to ten grandchildren. Furthermore, she enjoyed the company of fifteen great-grandchildren. Her home was often filled with joy and laughter. She took immense pride in her family’s accomplishments. Barbara is also survived by her sister, Patricia Blaschak. She was preceded in death by her siblings. These include Thomas Gajewski, Mary Jane Abbey, and Judith Wozniak. Her family remembers her as a central, loving figure.

Community Involvement and Legacy

Mrs. Abbey was an active and engaged member of the Dunkirk community. She held deep faith. She was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church. She also attended St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Furthermore, she was a member of St. Mary’s Church. Her spiritual life was very important to her. She participated in various local clubs. These included the First Ward Falcon Club. She was also part of the Northern Chautauqua Conservation Club. Moreover, she joined the Moniuszko Club and the Beaver Club. Her presence enriched these organizations.

Beyond her community roles, Barbara had several hobbies. She enjoyed bowling and golfing. Playing cards was another favorite pastime. She also loved fishing and gardening. These activities brought her much happiness. She was a passionate fan of the Buffalo Bills. Her enthusiasm for the team was well-known. Her vibrant spirit touched everyone she met. Barbara J. Abbey leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and community spirit.

Funeral Services Announced

Friends are invited to pay their respects. Calling hours will be held at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. The service schedule will be announced soon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. This will take place at Holy Trinity Church. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Gowanda. These services will honor Mrs. Abbey’s memory. They provide an opportunity for reflection and remembrance.
