CPSC Issues Urgent Warning After Severe Pressure Cooker Burns

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued an important safety alert. The warning concerns certain electric pressure cookers. These appliances have been linked to severe burn injuries. Consumers across the nation are advised to take immediate action.

Dozens of Burn Injuries Reported

The CPSC has received numerous reports. Incidents describe lids unexpectedly detaching from pressure cookers. This happens while the units are still under high pressure. Hot contents then spray out. This has caused serious thermal burns to users.

Many victims required medical attention. Some injuries were third-degree burns. These incidents highlight a significant safety hazard in kitchens.

Affected Pressure Cooker Brands

Several brands and models are under scrutiny. The CPSC specifically named units such as the Tristar Power Pressure Cooker XL. The Emeril Lagasse Pressure AirFryer is also part of this warning. These products are widely available to U.S. consumers. They are sold at major retailers and online. The CPSC urges owners to identify their specific models. Product numbers are often found on the bottom of the unit.

Why Are These Cookers Dangerous?

The core issue involves the lid locking mechanism. In faulty units, the lid can be opened while pressure remains inside. This should not be possible with safe designs. A sudden release of pressurized steam and hot food is extremely dangerous. It can cause explosions of scalding liquids.

Engineers believe a design flaw is responsible. Manufacturing defects might also contribute. These failures pose a serious risk during cooking.

What Consumers Should Do Now

The CPSC advises consumers to stop using the identified pressure cookers immediately. Do not attempt to use them again. Contact the manufacturer directly for remedies. This may include a refund, repair, or replacement. Consumers should also check the CPSC website for updates. The official recall list provides crucial information. Meanwhile, always register new kitchen appliances. This ensures you receive direct safety notifications.

Prioritizing Kitchen Safety

This warning serves as a reminder for home cooks. Appliance safety is paramount. Always read user manuals thoroughly. Follow all operating instructions. Ensure lids are properly secured before cooking. Never force a lid open. Wait for pressure to fully release. Check for any damage to your pressure cooker. Report any malfunctions to the manufacturer and the CPSC.

Consumer safety remains a top priority. The CPSC continues to monitor product safety. They aim to prevent future injuries. Stay informed to keep your home safe.
