2024 NFL Combine: Defensive Linemen and Linebackers Impress in Indianapolis

The 2024 NFL Scouting Combine continued this week in Indianapolis. Top defensive linemen and linebackers took the field. They completed various drills to showcase their athletic abilities. NFL scouts and coaches closely observed each prospect. The goal for these athletes is to improve their standing for the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.

Defensive Line Prospects Shine

Several defensive linemen delivered strong performances. Key prospects like Braden Fiske from Florida State stood out. Fiske ran an impressive 4.78-second 40-yard dash. This was a notable time for his position. He also recorded a 33.5-inch vertical jump. Fiske showed explosiveness during his broad jump. He also had quick times in agility drills. Meanwhile, Jer’Zhan Newton from Illinois did not participate in the 40-yard dash. However, he did engage in position drills. Newton’s movements were fluid and powerful. Laiatu Latu, an edge rusher from UCLA, posted good numbers. He clocked a 4.64-second 40-yard dash. Latu also impressed in the broad jump.

Linebackers Post Fast Times and Strong Jumps

Linebackers also had a strong showing at the Combine. Edgerrin Cooper from Texas A&M was a top performer. He ran a blazing 4.51-second 40-yard dash. Cooper added a 38-inch vertical jump. His broad jump reached an impressive 11 feet, 1 inch. These numbers highlight his elite athleticism. Additionally, Dallas Turner from Alabama showcased his speed. He ran a 4.46-second 40-yard dash. This was among the fastest for all linebackers. Payton Wilson from NC State also posted a quick 4.43-second 40-yard dash. His performance generated significant buzz. Junior Colson from Michigan showed good agility. He also recorded solid jump numbers. These athletes aim to solidify their draft positions.

Impact on NFL Draft Stock

Combine performances are crucial for draft prospects. Strong showings can significantly raise a player’s draft stock. Conversely, poor results can sometimes cause a player to fall. Scouts evaluate measurable data alongside on-field tape. These workouts provide valuable context. They help teams project how players will transition to the NFL. The Combine also includes interviews. Prospects meet with team officials during their time in Indianapolis.

NFL Teams Observe Talent

Team representatives from across the league were present. Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin attended the event. General Manager Omar Khan was also on hand. They watched drills intently. NFL teams are looking for future contributors. The Combine offers a rare chance to compare prospects side-by-side. These observations inform draft day decisions. The focus now shifts to individual pro days. These will further shape the 2024 NFL Draft class.
